Doe Demure Presents: Leicester, A Forgotten City
Dreamt up during the first UK National lockdown, this 15 minute dance uses the voice of Burlesque parody (without the strip) and Contemporary Fusion Bellydance to explore feelings of lockdown isolation, and those forced to continue working throughout the pandemic in illegally cramped conditions (such as at Leicester’s Boohoo clothing ‘sweatshop’, for as little as £3.50 an hour). The greed of the wealthy corporation owners driving the spread of disease is contrasted by the joy of nature thriving without human pollution when the world briefly ‘stopped’- a representation of the hope and inevitable re-growth following any collective trauma in history.
Leicester was the first UK city to be placed into local lockdown and some say it has been left there and forgotten. The dancers learned this piece via Zoom, only meeting in person on the day of filming. Choreography by Hannah Myatt (Doe Demure), filmed by Attenborough Arts Centre, and set to the ambient sounds of Leicester musician Tablic. Filmed in 2020.
